Blessed by its proximity to the Imperial City and the serene Perfume River, Kim Long gradually transformed from a quiet riverside landscape into a favored residence of the Nguyễn royal family and aristocracy, leaving behind a rich legacy of garden houses, ancestral shrines, and traditional architecture.
From Untamed Land to a Promised Land
Before becoming part of Đại Việt, the land around present-day Huế belonged to the Champa cultural sphere. In 1306, the marriage of Princess Huyền Trân and King Chế Mân brought the territories of Ô and Lý into Đại Việt, opening the way for Vietnamese settlement further south.
Centuries later, Nguyễn Hoàng arrived in 1558. Legend tells of his encounter with a mysterious woman in red on Hà Khê Hill, who foretold the rise of a prosperous land. The site later became Thiên Mụ Pagoda, overlooking the Perfume River.
A Royal Retreat by the Perfume River
As Phú Xuân grew into the political heart of the Nguyễn Lords, Kim Long became a favored residence of royal relatives, noble families, and senior mandarins. Its peaceful landscape and auspicious setting inspired the creation of grand phủ đệ, garden houses, and family shrines.
Here, architecture, gardens, and courtly traditions developed in harmony with nature.
A Living Heritage of Old Huế
Today, Kim Long remains one of Huế’s most evocative historic neighborhoods. Its quiet lanes, gardens, and surviving houses preserve traces of the royal families and mandarins who once lived here — keeping the refined spirit of old Huế alive in the present.
