Phu Mong's Mandarin Houses - Art of Living
Just a stone-away from the city hustle, you immediately feel the difference of the green Phu Mong neighborhood. Behind the green hedges and a losingly gate hides a blissful universe of plants, architecture, and mankind. This is called “Beam house” or “Garden-house”. Dated back to the 18th century, they were built for princes, princesses, mandarins, aristocrats. This precious heritage is now under threat of distinction, due to socio-economic, environmental challenges. Unveil unique features of beam house construction, meticulous sculpture.
Today, start your walking past some other mandarin residences alongside canal and ranges of areca palm to explore garden-houses which best kept royal family virtue. Slow down to learn about Feng Shui, refined arts and crafts displayed on each rare premise. Feeling the life in the heart of a hospitable family to really appreciate the local art of living. Stop at a magnificent shrine house dedicated to a high-ranking mandarin called Spring Blossom Temple (Xuan Vien Tieu Cung) built in 1894 under Thanh Thai Regime Nguyen. Then we pay a visit to a local family where the people made conical hat, which is a symbol of Vietnamese culture as well as Vietnamese women. The family started making this product from special material called Indian almond leaf for 7 years ago. Try to paint on the leaf or on the folding fan yourself and bring home.
Pursue your exploration, pay a visit to a local family and take part to prepare a typical food and you can try to hand-on making a local cake from local ingredients (Rice dumpling cake: Tapioca starch, shrimp and pork belly served with sweet chili sauce).
